Amersfoort by Bike – The Frontline of Suffering and Strength
Fully guided, small-group historical bike tour

Join me on a fully guided World War II bike tour through the Amersfoort region. This experience is designed for small groups of up to approximately 12 people. As a result, the tour feels personal, flexible, and engaging from start to finish.

Start

We begin our journey at Amersfoort Central Station. From there, we cycle through the city and surrounding countryside, stopping at several key WWII landmarks. At each stop, I share real-life stories, historical context, and local perspectives. Unlike scripted tours, this one adapts to your interests and questions.

Along the way, we take time to reflect. Meanwhile, you’ll have the chance to ask questions and connect more deeply with the history around you.

Key locations

After a brief introduction, we head straight toward the historic Grebbelinie. This former line of defense shows how the Netherlands tried to prepare for the German invasion. In contrast to what followed, it reveals both hope and heartbreak.

The bike ride along this defense line offers both beautiful country-scenery as well as historical scenes. We will stop at two key locations where we can have short walks, see original bunkers and even visit and enter one.

Next, we visit Nationaal Monument Kamp Amersfoort, a former concentrationcamp. Here, we park our bikes and continue on foot. I will guide you through the site during a walking tour of approximately 1 hour. Afterwards, you have the time to explore the museum on your own. Audio guides are freely available.

Then, we cycle to the Soviet Experience and the Soviet War Cemetery. These locations tell the powerful and lesser known stories of Soviet prisoners held during the war.

Finally we’ll head back towards Amersfoort Central Station with again several short stops at key locations.

Biking

Although we cover around 15,5 miles, the ride is gentle. Frequent stops, rest moments, and storytelling keep the pace relaxed and enjoyable.
Finally, we return to our starting point at Amersfoort Central Station — or another agreed location.
In short, this tour is ideal for anyone seeking a respectful, insightful, and memorable way to explore WWII history in the Netherlands.
